5G. A glimpse into the future

5G is coming fast, and it will lead to disruptive changes in the way we connect and we do things.

It’s important to keep in mind that 5G is a communication technology that was specifically designed with real-world applications in mind. Innovation is driven by market needs and money making business cases. Recent progress in computer power, sensor technology, artificial intelligence, have made possible several large new applications, with clear and significant business advantages. Such new applications range from autonomous vehicles to remote mining, significant industrial automation, or new entertainment services such as High Definition streaming or Virtual Reality.

Each of those applications has a set of specific requirements towards the underlying telecommunication network. Some applications (such as autonomous vehicles or remote surgery) requires ultra low latency communication, while other application may allow for slower and less reliable speeds, but a very large number of communication endpoints (for example, industrial sensors in the energy industry). In particular, the move toward smart manufacturing – the Industry 4.0 model – creates extra demands on 5G networking technologies – namely ubiquitous, reliable and seamless connectivity while meeting stringent real-time requirements.

In summary, there are three broad requirements towards the next generation of communication networks:

  1. Ultra Reliable, Low Latency Communication (URLLC). Networks should deliver data with the least possible amount of delay, very high availability.
  2. Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC). Networks should scale and accommodate a very large number of devices attempting to communicate at the same time.
  3. Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). Networks should allow large for irregular, and elastic high bandwidth streams, from and towards mobile devices.
