The 9145E is Canoga Perkins’ second generation Ethernet NID platform. The 9145E builds on the existing 9145 by adding new features and functions required by Service Providers to deliver MEF compliant Metro Ethernet Services.

9145E Hardened Application Overview

The 9145E extends the service core to the customer premises using Fiber Optic local loops on a manageable Metro Ethernet Services, Network Interface Device (Demarcation Device). For successful and profitable service deployment and high customer satisfaction in today’s demanding business environment, diagnostic, network performance and subscriber network/core network interoperability and compatibility are a necessity. The 9145E provides all these services and more, in a compact NID.

In-band SNMP or the Ethernet Management Port gives network operations and field personnel full access to the 9145E’s advanced diagnostics, traffic statistics, Performance Measuring, Service Available Monitoring, packet filtering, advanced VLAN tagging, CFM, EFM and management functions required by today’s Metro Ethernet Services and necessary for compatibility and interoperability with other network elements. With this wealth of capabilities and tools, service effecting problems are easily identified and corrected. Network, User, and Multi-Purpose Port interfaces on the 9145E are dual-function UTP/SFP for deployment flexibility. A variety of optical interfaces are available including Single Fiber and CWDM.

Canoga Perkins’ Performance Measuring (PM) and Service Availability Monitoring (SAM) software for the 9145E is configurable to meet your objectives in support of Service Level Agreement fulfillment or network health monitoring. PM and SAM operates between subscriber NIDs, or from the subscriber to the NNI handoff to off-net service providers. The Performance Monitoring System application for CanogaView Smart Element Manager provides provisioning, reporting and NBI functions.

In-band SNMP, Telnet and VT-100 management access is used exclusively or concurrently, matching the Service Providers operations requirements and preferences. This allows best matching of technique for surveillance, routine diagnostics or special testing for Metro Ethernet Services. The Telnet and VT-100 Menu Driven User Interface makes all management functions of the 9145E intuitive and easy to master. This greatly aids in provisioning, status monitoring, and diagnosing problems. It decreases the time and manpower to install services and diagnose and correct problems, getting the service generating revenue sooner, maintaining high availability for the service, and increasing customer retention and satisfaction.

In-band SNMP and SideBand can be used exclusively or concurrently, matching the Service Providers operations requirements and preferences. This allows best matching of technique for surveillance, routine diagnostics or special testing for TLS (shared backbone/VPN services). SideBand ensures the customer has full wireline bandwidth at all times while still providing full management access for the Service Provider for LES (private line type services). Mid-point management access allow easy and quick identification of problems to the circuit segment and cause,This maximizes service availability.

Application

9145 VLAN Tagging and QOS Functions

A common Ethernet Service is Transparent LAN Services (TLS), a shared backbone VPN service. Subscribers only sees their locations on the network, no one else. This service is the Ethernet analog of the traditional Frame Relay Service, but simpler for the subscriber to implement. A popular method of implementing the VPN within the Service Provider network is by the use of 802.11g VLANs.

Trusting the subscriber to correctly tag traffic 100% of the time is risky, problematic, and usually leads to service problems. Canoga Perkins’ line of Network Interface Devices and Metro Ethernet Switches are optimized for the subscriber interface and has powerful VLAN Tagging and Translation functions. An additional capability is the capability to set a priority indicator in the VLAN Tag header.

The 9145 Network

Interface Device performs four VLAN related functions:

  • Tagging untagged subscriber frames
  • Translating a subscriber tagged frame to a different tag
  • Adding an outer tag to a subscriber tagged frame
  • Setting P-Bit values
Referring to the above diagram, the 9145 tags untagged subscriber traffic with VLAN ID D. Standard 1420 Byte frames or Jumbo Frames up to 9Kbytes are supported and transparently tagged. Concurrently, subscriber VLAN tagged frames (VLAN ID A) to get translated to a different VLAN ID, E in this example. VLAN ID B remains unchanged while VLAN C frames received an outer tag of VLAN ID F (VLAN Stacking). The 9145 tags the entire frame irrespective of the number of tags the frame already possesses. Quality Of Service (QOS) or (P-Bit) handling is configurable for a specific value or replication of the original frame’s value.The flexibility of setting VLAN parameters allow you to condition subscriber traffic in a format optimized for core network transport without unnecessary configurations/changes to the core network or subscriber’s network.
