10/100/1000 Ethernet Service Unit- Model L357

The ability to anticipate and rapidly respond to service problems are key for successfully deployment Ethernet Services and for Service Providers to meet and exceed the expectations of today's demanding customers. Secure management access, advanced diagnostics, traffic statistics and flexibility of deployment of the L357 Ethernet Service Unit are enablers that allow Service Providers to supply the reliable services customer expect.

The L357 ESU, in concert with the 9145 Network Interface Device, delivers advanced Ethernet services. Canoga Perkins' SideBand Management Channel enables L357 ESU access to the 9145 NID's management functions, placing management communications between outside user bandwidth. This allows Service Providers to provide maximum bandwidth to the customer while maintaining full management contact with the Remote NID.

Canoga Perkins is a proud member of the Metro Ethernet Forum and aligns management structures with the Forum's recommendations.

L357 Application Overview

Managing the local loop in Ethernet Services is crucial for overall services delivery and installation. Though there are many management tools available for the core, the local loop where service-effecting problems are most likely to occur, often lacks comprehensive diagnostic and configuration tools for identifying network vs. customer problems. Canoga Perkins’ line of fully managed Ethernet Service Units corrects this situation and provides a common solution for the central office/POP Site and the demarcation point at the customer premises.

The L357 Ethernet Service Unit’s (ESU) comprehensive configuration, status, traffic monitoring and diagnostic functions give you the control of the local loop needed to ensure reliable network access. The L357 ESU support Canoga Perkins’ Advanced SideBand Management Channel placing management traffic to the Remote L357 ESU outside of the customer’s bandwidth making management traffic transparent to customer traffic. The Advanced SideBand Management allows the L357 to communicate with remote L357s or 9145 Network Interface Devices (NID). The L357 ESU and 9145 NID give Service Providers a choice of demarcation devices to best meet network interface and technical operations needs.

Terminating 10 Mbps Ethernet, 100Mbps Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet Services with a managed demarcation device, the L357 ESU is an excellent choice. For more complex traffic interface requirements, like VLAN tagging or translation, PVST+BPDU filtering, network performance testing and RMON support, the 9145 NID provides the interfacing and network protection functions needed by many of today’s advanced core networks.

LAN Extension Services, Ethernet Private Lines, are often unmanageable due to the lack of presence of a service provider’s Ethernet switch on the data path. SideBand Management allows full management of the customer premises located ESU or NID without a switch at the central office or reducing customer bandwidth. In Transparent LAN Services, Shared Backbone Networks, the L357 enhances management security since customer traffic and management traffic do not share the same data path.

Meeting the demands of customers for high service availability is achievable with the L357 Ethernet Service unit on the local loop. Proactive management allows Tech Support personnel to respond to situations quickly, minimizing or eliminating outages and keeping the customer satisfied.
